Sweathog

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was in a great mood again this morning, and as such I was far to happy and excited to nap. However, Mommy really stuck to her guns, pinned me down, and waited until I fell asleep. We snoozed together on the couch for 90 minutes!

Later in the day we walked to the drug store for some groceries and bug spray related products. I amiled and waved to the lady at the register, and she told me I made her day. Isn't that sweet? I have that affect on people.

Did I mention that it's hot out? Mommy and Daddy both have a bad case of 'humidity hair.' I don't think I can recall ever being as hot as I was today. I'm a sweaty, chubby little baby.

Transit Strike

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was in a so-so mood today... had something of a light sleep last night. Ever notice how on the days where I nap well, I sleep well that evening, and on the days where I don't nap, I end up sleeping lightly? Weird.

There was an unexpected transit strike in the city today, which threw a lot of people off. Plus, it was, like, thirty degrees outside - Mommy and I sweltered in the hot sun outside, levelling-off the patio-hole dug in the backyard. Meanwhile, Daddy met with Cool Uncle Gareth downtown and they walked home (Gareth didn't have shoes or socks, believe it or not... he had some scary blisters!), and I played with them both before bed.

I should note that my favourite phrase, "Num-Num" or "Nummie-Nummie" now means 'Give me that' as well as 'feed me' and 'I'm hungry.' I don't just say "Num-Num" to my parents - sometimes I say it to closed food containers.

Consciousness Marathon 2006

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I woke up at 6:30 A.M. this morning, and went to bed at 8:00 P.M. - there were NO naps in-between that lasted for longer than 20 minutes. I even woke up again at 9:00 P.M., and Gamma looked after me while my folks were out.

Since there was no sleep, there was ample variable crankiness - I was in a great mood while I watched a fun documentary with Daddy and Cool Uncle Gareth (which made me dance) and I had a pretty good time going to the mall with them and Mommy later in the day. However, I hated every second of a bike ride Mommy and Daddy and I took in the afternoon. I screamed and screamed and screamed from my little bike trailer-thing. Let's hope it doesn't put Mommy off of riding with me.

Did I mention that I gave myself a black eye today by banging my face into the coffee table? Well, I did.

Wake Up and Smell the Flowers

[As transcribed by Daddy]

First thing in the morning - I'm wiggly, Daddy's asleep. Mommy gives me to Daddy to watch while she gets food ready. Daddy is still asleep. I crawl right off the bed and clunk my head. Mommy yells at Daddy. Daddy goes back to sleep.

We went to visit the chiropractor, and then we headed home for some quick lunch (Daddy's new diet starts today) and some yard sale investigations, where Mommy found me some sandbox toys. Then, I had a pretty long nap.

We were once again off to the Greenwood Conservation Area in Ajax, where we had a nice hike - but there were way too many mosquitos out this time. We headed home, and I showed Daddy something I've learned to do - I go up to pretty flowers, smell them, and go "MMM!"

Sadness Cycle

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was in a pretty terrible mood this morning, and I wish I could tell you why... but I can't. I didn't want to sit on the floor, I didn't want to sleep, I just wanted to be grumpy. My being grumpy made Mommy get grumpy, which made me get upset, which made Mommy get upset... you get the idea. We've got a sychophantic cycle of sadness goin' here.

Somehow we managed to get through the day together, though - we went for a nice walk outside, and enjoyed the cloudy humidity. Daddy came home from work, and took me to visit my Cool Uncle Gareth, who really made me laugh.

I really tried to fight off sleep tonight - but it's just too powerful for me!

Gentian Violet

[As transcribed by Daddy]

This morning Mommy and I took a nice long walk over to Home Depot and Shoppers Drug Mart for some paint and groceries. We came home, and after lunch, Mommy painted the wall in the kitchen! A nice surprise for Daddy when he came home from work.

I refused to nap this afternoon, which made me alternately tired and cranky. My parents have taken notice - when I'm not asleep and completely inert, I am in a constant state of kinetic motion. I never stop moving. Lord help us all when I take to walking on my own.

Oh, and I should mention that while having my diaper changed, I got away from Mommy and peed all over my doll "Dingy-Dingy". Funny stuff at the time. Oh, and I got Gentian Violet all over my face, as you can see from the above photo.

Cocytus Caca

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Today was good - I did a heck of a lot of pooping. Since being on formula, my diapers have been consistenly filled by the most foul, fetid, funky, malodorous, mephitic, noisome, olid, putrid, rancid, rank, reeking, stinking, grody, gross, icky, loathsome, noxious, offensive, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, yucky* poopie to ever burst forth from the ninth level of hell.

Went to the Doctor's office with Mommy today, to hopefully get to the bottom of these recent breastfeeding issues. Apparently, there's not much we can do - just feed when possible, and keep taking our medicine. 10 months is a pretty good time to start weaning, anyway.

I woke up in the middle of the night - but not during the season finale of Mommy & Daddy's favourite show, thank goodness.

Props

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I woke up pretty early this morning, and was ready to play. Too bad for my parents, who wanted to sleep - because my will is LAW.

Had a nice day with Mommy - we peeked at each other through a roll of green edge tape, and I pushed my little blue and pink scooter all over the house (see photo). Mommy had to take Basil to the vet, so I hung out with Gamma and Anisa. I ate a cookie, and got cookie goo all over Gamma. Long story.

Daddy came home, and we played with a long cardboard tube his friend Cynthia sent us (I think it may have also contained a photograph for Daddy). Fun stuff!

Distillery Daycare

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Brrr, it was freezing in my room last night!

I got a nice treat today - Cool Uncle Gareth is in town. After lunch, Mommy and Daddy and I picked him up from the subway station and went for a nice afternoon drive, seeing as how it's a holiday and everything.

We all went and checked out a bunch of galleries in Toronto's lovely Distillery District. It was a shame it's so freakishly cold outside, and that most of the places were closed. Oh well, we had a nice time anyway.

After dinner, Mommy decided to try to breastfeed me one more time before bed. I was more than willing, and so far, she hasn't had too much major pain, aside from a few twinges. We'll see how things go... and I hear that Cool Uncle Gareth and Julia got me some presents. I'll have to check them out tomorrow, unless I'm awoken by the fireworks outside.

I love a good crowd

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Woke up in another great mood - very chatty and crawly. After brunch n' lunch, Mommy and Daddy and I drove down to a mall I haven't been before - it was packed full of people! I've never seen so many in one place before in my life. I enjoyed it, but Mommy didn't, so we headed home again. It's freezing cold outside - windy and wet... which is weird, considering how lovely it was yesterday.

After a quick jaunt to an art store for Mommy's supplies, we all had some dinner, and then it was bedtime for me. Putting me to sleep was very hard for Mommy... she's not sure that she's ready to stop breastfeeding yet. Even though the pain between feedings is unbearable, so is the thought of not having that connection with me.

Basil can tell that she's sad, and is being very snuggly with her.

Cold Turkey

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Considering that I'm going completely cold turkey off of breast milk starting today, I was in a really great mood from morning 'till night. I was happy, super chatty, crawly and climby, and hungry.

After a quick jaunt to a couple of grocery stores (one for organic food, and one for everything else) Mommy and Daddy and Basil and I went for aan afternoon drive to a conservation area in Ajax... we had a nice 90-minute hike. We had a really awesome time.

Before dinner, Daddy took me around to the front of the house, where for the first time ever, I saw my shadow. It was weird, and waved at me! Does that mean we'll have six more weeks of winter?

The Final Feeding

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Had another nice breakfast with Mommy and Nana at Panera's - Mommy's breatfeeding problems were still causing her pain all day, so she avoided feeding me for the most part, despite my constant requests for "Nummie Nummie Nummie."

After lunch, we headed off to the airport with Nana and Jim, who I'll miss. Mommy and I watched airplanes come and go while waiting for our flight - but I was way more interested in the potted plants in the terminal. The flight was fine - Mommy managed to feed me, but I was as pinchy and wiggly as usual. Sad to think that it was probably the last time I'll ever be breastfed. Ah well... at least it was in the sky! We picked up some formula on the way home from the airport.

I was really glad to see Daddy (I did the happydance for him) and Basil and Gamma and Grandpa and Anisa when I got home - unfortunately, I was waaaay too sleepy to spend much time with them. Daddy was happy to see Mommy and I - he cleaned up the place while we were gone. S'nice.

Ten Months Old!

Today I'm ten months old, or forty weeks old - the same amount of time I spent changing from zygote to baby whilst in the womb. I have to say, I've enjoyed this second ten months much more.

Went shopping at the mall this morning with Mommy and Nana - bought some clothes. After that, Jim joined us all for a Chinese buffet, where I found a plastic-wrapped fortune cookie. I played with that thing for the rest of the entire day. It was enthralling!

Mommy's friend Sara stopped by to take Mommy out for dinner, so I stayed home with Nana tonight. We hung out, played on the swing... you know. Nana/Baby stuff. All in all, it was a great, extremely happy day.

Mommy is suffering from some pretty bad breast pain again. She's really starting to think that it's time for me to stop breastfeeding.

Rotund

[As told to Mommy, as transcribed by Daddy]

Went to Panera's for lunch, with Mommy and Nana, and I shared some of Nana's bagel. After that, we went to the beach, seeing as how the crazy weather has finally relaxed a bit... I had a nice time playing in the sand.

On the way home, we drove along the coast and surveyed some of the flood damage - I didn't care for any of it. I just wanted to be held, and made sure I let everyone know it.

At dinner, I shocked Nana and Jim (and Mommy, too) with the sheer amount of dinner I packed away, including some new foogs - cottage cheese, and pork. Once I was done, I was... uh... quite 'rotund', and had a hard time rolling over, I was so tubby.

Dressing Up

[As told to Mommy, as transcribed by Daddy]

Didn't do much today. I had several long and deep naps, hung out with Mommy, Nana, Jim, and Charlie. I got to play with some of Charlie's toys, and at one point I found a pack of Tic Tacs that held my attention for quite some time. Did you know that when you shake them, they rattle? Amazing. What'll they think of next?

I played in some of Nana's jewelry and stuff... hence the above photo. Aren't I cute?

Playing with Nana

[As told to Mommy, as transcribed by Daddy]

I woke up at 2:30 a.m., and thought it was party time. Mommy eventually got me back to sleep, only to have me wake again at six in the morning. Hah!

I went to Wal-Mart with Mommy and Nana today, and did a little bit of shopping. It's still rainy and wet outside, but it looks like it's letting up a bit - everyone hopes the nearby flooding relaxes. Anyhoo, Mommy bought this little wearable toothbrush-thing for my single tooth, which I absolutely LOVE to play with.

I also played a lot with Nana today. We crawled around the floor, she put a ribbon in my hair... 'twas a lot of fun! I like her a lot.

Daddy and Basil, still in Canada, miss me an awful lot.

Airplanes & Nosebleeds

[As told to Mommy, as transcribed by Daddy]

Up and at 'em early this morning - Daddy drove Mommy and I to the airport, where we checked our bags and boarded something called an 'Airplane.' I fell asleep and missed the whole 'taking off' part, but was awake long enough to enjoy being trapped in a small plane... ...until we landed and the engines shut off. Then I freaked out.

Then, it was off to Nana and Jim's place. For some reason, everything here in New Hampshire is underwater. I've never seen it rain this much! Nana says I look smaller than she expected - I guess the camera (or blog) really DOES add ten pounds.

Before bed, I was crawling around and pulled a massive seashell off of a shelf or something, and it bounded off of my face, giving me a nosebleed. I was pretty traumatized (as was Mommy)... ...until I went to sleep shortly afterwards.

Clinical

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was in the best, most awesome mood today. I was really happy and chatty and into climbing everything from Daddy's torso to the stairs to Basil's face.

Early today we went to the hospital to visit a breastfeeding clinic to find out why Mommy is always in pain between feedings, and they prescribed some medicine. I had a great time in the waiting room - we especially loved looking at their copy of the 'Soft Focus Bi-Racial Breastfeeding 2006' calendar.

After that, we drove across town to pick up a travel bag for my car seat. I guess it'll be... ...travelling somewhere?

Daddy went out to a concert with a friend of his, so it was just Mommy and I in the evening. We had a bath, ate some purple breast medicine, and turned in early.

The Breastfeeding Blues

[As transcribed by Daddy]

After Dad went to work, Mommy tried to breastfeed me, and as usual, it really hurt (her). While contemplating no longer breastfeeding me, Mommy became very melancholy. After all, I make it loud and clear that my favourite thing on Earth is breastfeeding.

She got pretty sad (plus she's still got a cold and hasn't been able to go outside or enjoy the nice weather)... she called Daddy home from work to keep us company. He did [Thanks to everyone at his job for understanding] and, we went to the mall to pick up Mommy's contact lenses. It didn't seem to make her much happier.

After a post-dinner walk with Daddy and Gamma and Basil, though, she finally seemed to be happier. Daddy put me to bed, and went to work on some banners.

Rain

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Daddy and I danced together to some bouncy music before he went to work. The pouring rain outside seemed to make me a bit sleepy... I went down for a morning nap pretty quickly.

In the afternoon, I did some grocery shopping with Mommy and my grandparents. We had a pretty good time.

Daddy's show was on TV tonight, so instead of missing the first half (which he usually does) while putting me to bed, he sent me to bed 30 minutes early - at 7:30. It's cute - once I'm in my crib, I 'assume the position' - I crawl into the corner, roll onto my front, and scrunch up my body so that my butt is in the air. This is how I sleep.

Thursday, May 11, 2006

Stair Climber

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I spent a good chunk of the day alternately demanding to be fed or actually being fed. It's interesting to note, though, that my parents don't automatically 'give in' to my various tantrums. For example, every time I finish a meal, Mommy will proceed to show me the bottom of the bowl... which makes me freak out. They never refill the bowl, which is what I WANT them to do when I cry. It's getting old.

Today, I learned a new trick with Daddy - if he sticks his hand out, I slap it with mine. It makes him laugh.

I started climbing on the furniture today, so Mommy decided to let me climb the stairs in the hallway. My first time on stairs, and I climbed the entire flight!

Sidestepping

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I played in Basil's water dish again today, and made a huge mess in the kitchen.

Before that, however, I taught myself how to side-step... I hoist myself up to a standing position, using the edge of the futon for balance, and then shimmy from one end of it to another. I was so proud of myself that I stayed in a great, triumphant mood all day. In fact, I sang along with Daddy as he put me to bed - one long, sustained d-flat drone. For about twenty minutes.

That's gotta be a record.

Exhausted Daddy, Miserable Mommy

[As transcribed by Daddy]

This morning after I woke up, I silently tried to pull the contents of my bedroom into my crib, to mixed results.

Mommy's cold was bad again today, and she ran a slight fever, which made her absolutely miserable all day long (she managed to hold it together enough to look after me, though). She's not used to having colds last this long.

Daddy rode his bike to and from work for the first time this year - once he got home, he was completely wiped out. After a quick break, he helped take care of Mommy and I and even managed to get some housework done before putting me to bed. Then, he passed out on the couch.

Here's hoping Mommy feels better tomorrow.

Tooth #2

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Woke up pretty early, plus, Mommy seemed pretty sick first thing today (she got better), so the day got started really early for us. After lunch, we went to the bookstore, came home to check on some bread Mommy was baking, and then headed out again - this time to a 'decorating' store, and then to a sports store, so Daddy could buy some bike shorts.

Afterwards, there was more bread baking, patio digging, and crawling around to be done. Gamma and Anisa are off to see Anisa's family... I'll miss them!

I've gottan really good at being able to associate hand signals and gestures with words. For example, if you say "no" to me, I'll shake my head from left-to-right. Oh, and uh... looks like I've got another tooth coming.

Blocked Duct

[As transcribed by Daddy]

This morning it turned out that Mommy had a blocked duct in her breast - which, believe me, seems to be about as bad as it sounds. She was in a lot of pain all day, and needless to say, feeding was no picnic.

Julia came to visit Gamma and Grandpa and Anisa, so we all went over for lunch. Then we all went down to Richard's now-open gallery, and had another nice visit, and looked at the lovely photos.

Mommy and Daddy and I went for a drive - Daddy got a new, more comfortable bike seat, and then we came home (it was too chilly to go for a bike ride). Once there, though, Mommy started having duct problems - so Daddy and I hung out for a few hours (we cleaned, ate, and snoozed) while Mommy relaxed in the tub.

She still seems pretty sick... hopefully tomorrow is better.

Fashionably Late

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was pleasantly happy for, like, the umpteenth day in a row - Mommy strapped me into my little baby-trailer-thing and rode me via bicycle to one of our little Post-Natal class get-together things. We arrived about an hour late, but it was alright. At least all eyes were on me when we walked in.

I played with the other kids, did some craling, and impressed the other Mommies with my head-shaking-"no" thing and my waving-goodbye thing. A lot of the other kids can say "bye", but I'm the only one who can act it out.

Bunny Eye-Poke

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Today I went with Mommy, Gamma, and Anisa to the mall, so that we could buy some contact lenses and some new pairs of pants for Daddy. I enjoyed it, but I was very happy to come home and get fed. For some reason, when we first came back to the house, I saw Basil's goofy face and emitted a huge squeal of glee.

When Daddy came home from work, he took me to the front lawn where we frolicked in the grass, as I love to do. A neighbour from down the street saw us playing, and brought a little fuzzy brown bunny over for me to pet.

I poked it in the eye!!!

Sick Daddy, Deyhdrated Mommy

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was in a great mood all day long today. I went for a nice walk with Mommy and Gamma, and after my second nap, Mommy took me for an additional bike ride through the park, which I quite enjoyed, even after she got completely dehydrated and almost passed out.

We came home, and Daddy cleaned up and took care of us while Mommy lay comatose on the couch. I was even in such a good mood, that while he sang me to sleep, I happily squeezed the heck out of his adam's apple. That'll be sure to help him get over his sore throat.

No reason... just 'cuz.

Daddy came home from work early today - his cold is really bad. We could tell how bad when he forgot to take his iPod to work this morning, and when he came home he didn't even turn the TV on! Mommy and I went easy on him and let him snooze.

Today Mommy put me in my new baby-bike trailer thing, which I hated at first - I thre a pretty righteous tantrum in there. She took me for a quick ride up the block and back... but I think it's gonna take some getting used to. Later in the day, I actually put up with wearing my helmet.

Oh, and I ate some beef for the first time.

Strangers with Helmets

[As transcribed by Daddy]

This morning I woke up, fed, and then immediately had a nap for over two hours. Not bad! It makes up for all the napping I didn't do during the rest of the day...

We all went to brunch down the street, and then we came home and got ready to run some errands. First we went organic-grocery shopping, then we went to the pet store for dog cookies (I laughed at the birds and puppies), then we went to Canadian Tire to buy some decorative lights for the patio, and then we went to the bike store, where Mommy got a bike and baby-trailer for her birthday AND Mother's Day combined! Some lady tried to fit me with a bike helmet, but I wasn't havin' that.

Daddy drove me home, and since there was no room in the car, Mommy had to ride her new bike all the way home. As soon as Daddy and I got home, he dropped me off at Gamma ad Grandpa's for dinner, and he rode out on his bike to meet Mommy on her way home. Once she got home, she fed me, and we both collapsed after a long, adventurous (and expensive) day.

I'm a happy kid living with my parents and our dog in Toronto. I'm goofy, sweet, smart, extremely chatty, and pretty much the cutest kid on the face of the Earth!
