Wood Chip Monster

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Surprise surprise... I had a Doctor's appointment this morning, which nobody told me about because they didn't want me getting worked up over the possibility of getting a needle. Luckily Cool Uncle Gareth had a Doctor's appointment too, so we all rode downtown together.

No needle required - although interestingly, I'm in the 90th percentile in height for six-year-olds. And I'm five. Wow! Oh well, not a surprise that I'm tall. Anyway, the Doctor also told me that I need to make sure I put enough suntan lotion on my face and arms and stuff.

School was good in the afternoon, although I took the Doctor's recommendation a little too much to heart and emerged from school plastered in lotion. Mommy came to pick me up to discover that the wood chips on the playground had been glued to my body, I had applied so much lotion! Crazy!

I asked for hamburgers for dinner, so Daddy and I did a last-minute grocery run and got hamburger fixings. It was pretty fun!

The Return of Professor Wormbog

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I think in my Gareth-related excitement, I totally forgot to mention that Mommy and I took Dennis for his first big vet appointment on Friday. Well, it happened. He's fine.

Today I spent some time hanging out with Cool Uncle Gareth again... I watched some of the big GP race with him and Gammy and Grandpa, and in the early afternoon, Gareth and I played with the Lego we bought yesterday.

Mommy and Daddy and Dennis and I walked over to the garden so that Mommy could plant some tomatoes while I played 'kick the dandelions' and Daddy and Dennis sat around. We walked home, and then headed out to run a few errands... we bought some groceries, a new Carcassonne expansion, and went to the little bookstore on Mount Pleasant where we accidentally found a brand new copy of Professor Wormbog, which we almost forgot we were even still searching for.

The Recital

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was up nice and early today - I hung out with Cool Uncle Gareth before it was time to get ready for my recital. Mommy got me into my costume, and then Daddy dropped me off at the Science Centre, where me and about a million other kids (give or take) went through a pretty big dress rehearsal.

The actual show started at three in the afternoon - my tap class was the 20th act of about 25, so my folks and grandparents (who were sitting pretty far back) watched a lot of other kids dance before it was our turn. Things went really well, although the music was so loud you couldn't hear us tapping! I had a good time, but I especially liked the big group finale at the end where all of the kids got on stage and danced.

I was pretty exhausted afterwards, but not so tired that I couldn't go with Daddy and Cool Uncle Gareth to the toy store to buy me some new Lego! Right after that it was time for dinner with Gammy and Grandpa and Mommy and Daddy and Gareth and Nee-Nee and Dia. I held it together despite the fact that I was ready to pass out.

Nuthin' but Gareth

[As transcribed by Daddy]

There's not much for me to say about today aside form the fact that I spent all morning in a state of utter excitement due to the impending arrival of Cool Uncle Gareth, and then he arrived and it was awesome. That's literally all there is to mention.

Actually, I did find some time to go to school today, but I don't have very much to report on that front. I had to re-clean my room after Mommy discovered that I had cleaned it by shoving everything under my bed. As soon as Gareth arrived in the afternoon, I made sure I monopolized him as much as possible! He put me upside-down, we played in my room, and all that fun stuff.

Tomorrow is my dance recital, but I really don't seem to care that much - I'm just more thrilled by the fact that COOL UNCLE GARETH IS HERE!!!

Impending Arrival

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Cool Uncle Gareth arrives tomorrow! I can't wait! I was so excited that he's coming that I actually cleaned up my room (by shoving everything under my bed) so that he and I will have a place to play with Lego and stuff. I'm not sure he knows that he'll be buying me Lego yet, but I'll let him know when he arrives.

We watched a play at school today - a play about super-heroes, so that made me pretty happy. They fought with flashlights and stuff.

Did I mentioned how excited I am that Cool Uncle Gareth is coming tomorrow? My anticipation pretty much completely overshadows any other thing that happened today or anything that I can remember. I even had a hard time going to sleep tonight, I was so excited.

The Gut

[As transcribed by Daddy]

We followed up my final dance lesson of the season yesterday with my last swimming lesson of the season this morning. I won't resume classes until the fall, so my instructor strongly suggested that I get into a pool at least once a week until then. Oh, and uh... he passed me with flying colours.

I had a nice time at school - while I was there, Mommy and Gammy went out and spent a fortune on flowers, which I was happy to see when I got home. Once Daddy got home from work, we all had dinner - I ate a MASSIVE bowl of soup and two very tall glasses of coconut water. As a result, my stomach appeared to be alarmingly distended. I kinda thought it was funny - I didn't like that everyone was making a fuss out of the size of my gut. My gut & I did some grocery shopping with Mommy and Daddy.

Have I mentioned how excited I am that Cool Uncle Gareth is coming to visit this weekend? I'm so excited!

On Stage

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I woke up with a song in my heart (Puff the Magic Dragon) which made me sing, and a splinter in my foot, which made me cry. Once the singing and drama was over, Mommy and I had a nice morning... I watched some television and played outside! We had such a good time that we completely forgot about the farmer's market.

Anyway, school was good, also... I got to take a trip over to the local Junior High, where I practiced a dance on the stage with my 8th Grade buddy Anna. That was pretty awesome! Also, i the playground, Claire's Mommy dropped off the Strawberry Shortcake toy I left at their place, which made me happy.

Mommy and I walked through the park to get to my last dance class to the year, which went well. We walked through the park on the way home, and Dennis was so happy to see me that he jumped on me and scratched my tummy. I was pretty upset with him about that.

Æthelred the Unready

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Mommy and I had a nice morning while it poured outside and while Daddy slept. Once he was up and it was time for lunch, the sun came out - we had smoked salmon and then I played outside while Mommy started taking care of a lot of yardwork.

I asked Daddy to take me to the mall, but since it's Victoria Day, everything is closed... except for Pacific Mall out in Markham. So, Daddy and I drove all the way to Pacific Mall for bubble tea... we got a Chinese decoration for Mommy to hang in the kitchen, too.

We decided to go to Jawny Bakers for dinner, where we all ate away the rest of the long weekend. Once we got home, Daddy did some genealogy research, and traced my ancestors back to Lady Godiva and King Æthelred the Unready. No foolin'.

Kick the Dandelions

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Mommy and I let Daddy sleep in a bit today - we all had a nice breakfast of duck egg breakfast sandwiches. Once everyone was ready, we walked over to the community garden, where Dennis rolled around in the grass and where Daddy and I played 'Kick the Dandelions'. Once Mommy was finished tidying up her garden plot, we started walking home...

...and got sidetracked by the opportunity to do some geocaching in the park, which in turn led us down a path of doing some serious hiking in the ravine. Once that was done, we began the long walk home... considering how wet and humid it was, Daddy and Dennis and I were surprisingly tired! It was as though we had a really serious hike, even though it was pretty much just in our back yard.

Once we had lunch, I did a lot of playing in the back yard and the front yard and stuff. Trinity gave me a bug catcher that I used to put stuff inside of... eventually Mommy and Daddy and I drove off to run some errands. We bought a new plunger, paint stripper, looked at new shoes, coffee, and then came home for dinner.

Maybe we should go for a hike tomorrow and make it a full long weekend of hiking.

Eugenia

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Well, we were all up and ready to go pretty early this morning... Mommy and I got all of our food and a lunch and stuff together and along with Daddy and Dennis, we were out of the house and on the road just after nine in the morning!

We had a long drive all the way out past Flesherton Ontario and into Eugenia, where we found a nifty piece of the Bruce Trail. We had a nice picnic in a park, and then checked out the massive Eugenia falls, and got as close to touching a huge rainbow that any of us may come to in our lifetimes. We had a really long and somewhat strenuous hike along the Bruce, beset by monster hills and bugs. It wasn't even two hours long, but felt like a mini-marathon.

We stopped in Shelburne on the way home for ice cream, and took it easy once we got home in the late afternoon. We all watched Doctor Who, had hot dogs, and I even did some playing outside. A great way to start the long weekend!

Apparently today was also the 100th anniversary of Parks Canada. It was totally accidental, but I think we celebrated appropriately.

Albert's Secret

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Okay, so today Mommy and I had a pretty good morning... eventually we headed downtown via a bus, the subway, and a streetcar. We did some window shopping and stuff before meeting with Daddy and Lisa down near where Daddy works. At my request, we ate at a patio - I had a massive pot or massive mussels.

I went to Daddy's office next, where I got to meet more of his co-workers and stuff, which was pretty fun! Mommy and I didn't stay long, however... we did some more shopping on Queen Street, took the streetcar over to Queen East, bought groceries, and came home.

Dennis ate the feet off of one of my favourite dinosaur toys the other day, so we tried to replace him today, but no luck... we couldn't find an Albertasaurus. Instead, I picked out a T-Rex (named 'Albert') who we'll tell is an Albertasaurus. Under no circumstances can Albert discover that he is in fact a T-Rex.

I'd really appreciate it if you could help me keep that secret.

Smarter than Spencer

[As transcribed by Daddy]

This morning Mommy and I were hanging out, minding our own business, and getting ready to clean the kitchen, when Claire's Mommy invited us over to her house for a tea party. We quickly made a batch of scones and headed over, where along with Molly and her Nanny all had a big old lunch and overall fun time!

School was good... the weather was nice, so Mommy let me play in the playground afterwards for quite some time. I made friends with some older kid (Grade 2?) who was shocked to learn that Felicity and I were in Kindergarten or Grade 1, because we were smart. "You guys are smarter than Spencer, and he thinks he's in Grade ten", he said. No idea who Spencer is, but he sure sounds dumb.

Mommy passed out on the couch in the afternoon while I watched a DVD (I had something of a difficult day in class, so Mommy let me take it easy this afternoon). After Daddy came home from work, she made us a gloriously perfect steak salad for dinner.

Dennis' Duck

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Today's swimming lesson turned out to be extra-special today, seeing as how I had a supply teacher - my old swimming instructor Leslie from last year. We were so happy to see each other! Afterwards, we stopped at Canadian Tire for odds and ends, and I picked out a new toy duck for Dennis. I gave it to him once we got home - you have never ever seen a happier or prouder dog.

I also got new sandals and some vintage Strawberry Shortcake clothes in the mail, which I played with while Dennis trashed the kitchen. School was good - I stayed afterwards and played in the playground with Claire for a loooong time, and then Mommy and I continued to play 'parachutes' in the back yard for hours once we got home!

After Dinner, I did the grocery shopping with my folks. I actually did up a shopping list and everything, and my folks let me pick out all the weird stuff on it.

Back to the Market

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Bad news: it's still raining. Great news: today was the first day the local farmer's market is open this year! Mommy and I used Daddy's Metropass (which he forgot to take to work) to take the bus to the farmer's market, where we bought duck eggs, asparagus, rhubarb, and other goodies.

After lunch, I went to school, where was had some activities and stuff, and a pretty decent version of music class. After that was over, I headed home and had a nice afternoon with Mommy before we headed out to dance class, where I was photographed in my goofy dance costume in advance of the big recital. Phew!

Daddy was late coming home from work, so Mommy and I had dinner together. Shortly afterwards I requested that I go to bed... I was pretty tired. It was a busy day.

Exquisite Corpse

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was a little bit crabby this morning, but not for any good reason, or anything. Carrieann was scheduled to come over after school, so I pretty much decided to clean my room all by myself, all by my own choice. I did an okay job.

After lunch was school - we had a supply teacher for gym class, and then I got to hang out with my eighth grade friend Anna. We read books to each other and had a fun time. Carrieann came home with me, as planned... the two of us played a lot in the living room and then played in my bedroom. We had a great time, even though it was pouring outside.

After Daddy came home from work, we all had a lovely dinner, and then he showed me how to make fun 'exquisite corpse' drawings. We had fun, and even tried to (unsuccessfully) enlist Mommy into the act.

Spaghetti Muffins

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Yet again, I was up pretty early - excited to have a cool birthday party to go to in the afternoon. I spent the morning playing in my room and playing video games, and then I helped Mommy wrap presents for the party and bake gluten-free red ribbon cupcakes to take to the party (seeing as how I can't eat any birthday cake).

The party was pretty good - I had a good time, and especially liked the part where I got my fingernails painted. The birthday girl kept most of her new toys to herself, so I just played with the balloons, and was happy with that. Mommy and Daddy and Dennis went hiking in rain in the meantime, and picked me up afterwards. I was clearly exhausted from having such an awesome time, because I was pretty darned quiet for the rest of the day.

Daddy invented 'spaghetti muffins' this morning, and Mommy realized them for dinner. I have to say, I was a little skeptical of the idea (meat muffins with spaghetti noodle filling, frosted with cheese) but I enjoyed the results. Probably moreso than my folks, in fact.

Hoosier Cabinet

[As transcribed by Daddy]

We were all up and at 'em pretty early this morning... last night Mommy and Daddy picked up an antique Hoosier Cabinet last night, so there was lots of kitchen-related excitement to be had. When lunch finally rolled around, I suggested that we go out for dim sum. My parents couldn't think of a good reason not to, so... we did.

Lunch was great, although we totally pigged out. Once we were able to walk again, we hit the mall. I got some new t-shirts, we bought some presents for my friend Cadence (it's her birthday party tomorrow), and we got some odds and ends at Home Depot, too. It poured with rain the whole time.

At dinner we watched a new episode of Doctor Who, but unfortunately I was pretty jittery and noisy and had a hard time being quiet and sitting still, which ended up causing a lot of drama before bed. Hopefully I get a solid night's sleep tonight.

Pre-Rain Picnic

[As transcribed by Daddy on May 15th]

I was hoping to hang out with Carrieann after school today, but she had to cancel, so Mommy and I arranged a picnic lunch with her before school today. Isn't that nice? We had a great time, plus I got to get in some quality playground time before the rain came. Apparently, it's supposed to pour for the next seven days straight.

In the late afternoon, I joined Gammy and Nee-Nee for a pretty decent game of Carcassonne. I managed to do pretty well. Not only did I do that, but I took my bike out for a spin in the rain. My training wheels are still a little wonky, but the weather was warm and the sun was out, so... I didn't mind the wheels or the rain.

After Daddy got home from work and we all had some dinner, the rain stopped long enough for he and I to play Doctor Who in the backyard before I went to bed.

Dennis' Didgeridoo

[As transcribed by Daddy on May 14th]

I watched a lot more television and played a lot more video games on the computer compared to your average morning… Mommy has been turning the kitchen completely upside-down in an attempt to prime, clean, adjust, repair, and repaint it. Pretty much the entire contents of the kitchen have been emptied out into the rest of the house.

Today Dennis found an old cardboard wrapping paper tube, which he has decided to walk around with and chew on a bit. When he breathes into one end as he chews it, it makes the distinct sound of an Australian didgeridoo. As a result, the soothing sounds of the Australian Outback haunted us throughout the day.

Once Daddy got home from work, he walked over to my school with Mommy and I for the annual open house night. They got to see more of my drawings and crafts and stuff, got to talk with my teacher a bit, and I finally got to indulge my desire to go upstairs and see the classrooms of the higher grades.

Air High Five

[As transcribed by Daddy on May 13th]

My swimming instructor and I inadvertently invented the 'Air High Five' this morning, in which one gives an unconnected high-five from either end of a swimming pool. Its creation was necessitated due to some aquatic high-five mishaps that involved me swimming across the path of my fellow students, causing much havoc.

Mommy and I got lots of gear at Canadian Tire, but Tim Horton's was out of my customary post-swim yogurt, so Mommy made me a banana smoothie when we got home... which is a considerable feat given the state of the kitchen now that it's being repainted.

Carrieann came over after school - we played outside in the lovely weather and were joined by Dennis, who stayed lovingly fastened to a tree by the new lead we bought for him.

Chonta

[As transcribed by Daddy]

The weather was pretty nice today - a good day for a lot of playing outside and stuff. I had a nice lunch with Mommy before heading off to school, which was fun (as usual), followed by a lot of playing outside in the playground. I couldn't stay too long, however, because I had dance class!

Mommy and I walked over to dance class via the park. On the way, we stopped by a little flower garden that we'd never seen before, where someone had taken some lovely little flowers, clipped them, and discarded them on the ground! Mommy made me a beautiful bouquet of flowers from what we found littering the dirt.

Last night, Daddy was doing the grocery shopping when he discovered a can of Hearts of Palm ("Chonta"), had no idea what they were, and bought them for the heck of it. Mommy put them into a salad today and we all discovered that we absolutely love them.

Anna

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was extremely happy to go back to school today, after my brief but sidelining bout with chicken pox. Things were fun and and awesome - I got to see my friends, I got to play in the awesome weather, and all that stuff.

The cool part was when we all got assigned eighth-graders to 'hang out' with us or mentor us or something. I was paired with a lovely young lady named Anna. We coloured one another's nametags, and then we spent some time inventing a dance. Pretty fun! My parents think Anna must be the luckiest person in the world to get paired with me. because I'm great!

I took a whooole bunch of books home - library books AND books that Mommy and I ordered. So obviously there was a lot of reading today. Daddy was home from work a bit early, yet continued to do a lot of work throughout the evening.

Mother's Day Jammie Dodgers

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Daddy and I were up nice and early to make breakfast in bed for Mommy - I devised a customized bowl of cereal consisting of Mini Wheats and my gluten free corn flakes. Yummy! Then, we gave her the fancy candle and a book about antiquing. The best part was probably the card I made for her.

Soon after, we gave Gammy her Mother's day presents (Carcassonne expansion, candle, and a card) and then we had some lunch. We let Mommy pick today's activity, and so we headed out into the wonderful sunny spring day and did some hiking along the Bruce Trail. Dennis really pulled on his leash for the entire time... something about the weather seems to make him want to run and play.

We had a long drive home, during which we stopped for snacks (we found real honest-to-goodness Jammie Dodgers) and a new shower curtain rod at Ikea.

After dinner, I had a bath and went to bed right on time... gotta go back to school tomorrow!

Mother's Day Eve

[As transcribed by Daddy on May 9th]

Daddy woke up pretty early with a really bad tummy ache today, and kinda staggered around the house holding his cramping stomach for most of the day. From now on, he will decline the mushroom lasagna at Tutti Matti.

Mommy did a whole lot of work outside and inside while Daddy sat around and moaned, although he did manage to help her move the old dishwasher and stove from the back yard to the front. Now our place looks a lot less redneck-y.

Daddy and I DID manage to drive over to Anthrolpologie, where I picked out some cool presents for Mommy for Mother's Day. Once we got home again, we drove with Mommy to the game store, where we bought Gammy a Carcassonne expansion.

Dinner was delicious (for those of us who managed to actually eat some) - we watched a new episode of Doctor Who, and then it was time for bed. I can't wait for Mother's Day tomorrow!

Staying out the of the Way

[As transcribed by Daddy on May 8th]

And the renovations continue! While Ursula worked away in the new hallway and the new bathroom, Mommy dismantled out kitchen and started the lengthy process of priming and re-painting. I elected to stay out of the way and give Mommy space so that she could take care of the housework. Not out of courtesy, but because I really didn't want to have anything to do with it.

Since I'm still home from school due to my rapidly vanishing case of chicken pox, I watched a pretty cool movie on the computer. Mommy thought it was kinda adorable how I angrily yelled at the villains.

I was surprised to see Daddy came home from work a little earlier than usual due to a client presentation around the corner. I made him a lengthy grocery list, which unfortunately seemed to make his sudden onslaught of stomach flu worsen.

Spiffing Up The Plot

[As transcribed by Daddy on May 7th]

Another day with chicken pox... another day home from school. Luckily I had a vaccination months and months ago, so this appears to be the mildest case of chicken pox anyone has ever seen.

Mommy ran a quick errand to Home Depot today, so I went over and stayed with Gammy and Grandpa, who I had lunch with. We picked up Mommy, and then Grandpa drove us over to the garden, where Mommy used wood she bought to really spiff up our plot. I planted some carrots, lettuce, and got very bored. And dirty.

After dinner, I got to have a bath in our brand new bathtub in our brand new bathroom. It was pretty awesome - WAY better than our old bath. I stayed up a bit past my bedtime, too.

Pulling for the Pox

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I woke up this morning to discover itchy little bumps all over my body. It looked juuuust like the early stages of chicken pox to my folks. Hearing this made me pretty upset... especially when I learned that I was gonna have to miss swimming lessons ans school today (especially considering that I'm scheduled to be the school helper on Friday). For some reason, Daddy told me that you get to eat Jell-O when you have chicken pox. Upon reflection, he has no idea WHY he said this, but it worked... and Mommy had to listen to me ask about Jell-O all day long.

This afternoon, Grandpa drove Mommy and I to the Doctor's office. He confirmed that I either have a verrry mild case of chicken pox or bedbugs. We're all pulling for the pox.

Since I don't have to go to school tomorrow, I got to stay up a bit and watch Survivor with Daddy. As soon as I was asleep, my parents went to the supermarket to buy Jell-O.

Daddy's New Workplace

[As transcribed by Daddy]

This morning I was a little bit confused about school. We had no gym class scheduled, no music class planned, and no library, either. So... what were we gonna do? Turns out a whole lot of just hanging out in the classroom. But whatever, it was still fun, even though it was raining (which also meant no bike riding for me).

Anyway, dance class in the late afternoon was decent, too... even though I fell down one time. The jazz class got to watch us practice our tap recital, and then we got to watch their jazz recital.

After Daddy came home and had some dinner, he had to turn right around and go back to work quickly. I decided to tag along - I hung out in his new office with his friend Rebecca, who thought I was very precocious. I kept myself entertained by zooming around on office chairs.

Democracy In Action

[As transcribed by Daddy]

I couldn't wait to get home from school today (during which we had gym class) in order to take my brand new bike for a spin. I rode that thing all over the local sidewalk, even though my new training wheels (expertly affixed to my bike by Mommy) are so large that they lift the back wheel up and off of the pavement. Sure, it means I have to pedal twice as hard, but in a few months I should have very manly thighs.

I actually hopped right back on my bike as soon as Daddy got home from work. He let me (and Mommy and Dennis) accompany him to the local senior's centre, where he voted in the big Federal election. They even let me be the one to take his folded-up vote and put it in the voting box and everything. Aside from that, I have absolutely zero interest in our nation's political process.

Oh, and there's other news that people have been talking about, but I don't really understand it all. Maybe one day.

Training Wheel Energy

[As transcribed by Daddy]

Considering how busy we were yesterday, you'd think that I'd be either drained or have low energy today. No such luck. From the get-go, I was pretty full of rampant energy. I dragged my folks out of bed pretty early this morning, eager to buy replacement training wheels for my new bike.

We got our act together, got some breakfast, and drove all over in search of the correct training wheels (and a new shower curtain rod), and found them at Canadian Tire. We came home, had some lunch, and then Daddy went out to a seminar with Lisa.

Mommy watched a movie while he was out, and I played video games and played with my toys and stuff. Once he was back, we played Doctor Who, and then we all walked out in the rain to Jawny Bakers, where we met up with Lisa and Leo and Matt. I had a great time, and climbed all over my chair like it was a playground.

Christmas in May

[As transcribed by Daddy]

What a busy day. First thing, Mommy and I walked over to the community garden to help get it set up for the season... the weather was great, so there were lots of people there. I played, and then Daddy showed up and walked with me to the drug store while we discussed nuclear fission. We caught up with Mommy, came home, and had some lunch.

So... Daddy got paid the other day. Therefore, he and Mommy decided to buy that bike for me - the one they promised me for Christmas. We had a great time - I picked out an awesome one (I also got some new vintage Strawberry Shortcake toys), and then we drove around to pick up a new helmet and training wheels.

Once we got home, Mommy struggled to put together the bike, but finally managed, even without the proper instructions! I was bummed that the training wheels didn't fit, but we got to watch a new episode of Doctor Who, so I went to bed happy.

I'm a happy kid living with my parents and our dog in Toronto. I'm goofy, sweet, smart, extremely chatty, and pretty much the cutest kid on the face of the Earth!
