Cavities and Pianos

New TARDIS 05 by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on October 1st]

After psyching myself up, Mommy and I went over to the mall, where the dentist's office is. Mommy offered to sit in the room with me while the dentist filled my cavity, but they suggested that she wait in the other room. They applied a topical gel to my gums to numb me, and then I felt a little pinch (I had no idea a needle was ever involved) and then my face was numb! No crying, no complaints! I was in and out of there no problem. My parents were so proud of me!

I had school in the afternoon, which was fine... my face was still slightly numb, so that was funny. After school, Mommy took me over to Topham Park, where I had my first-ever piano lesson! My teacher was a boring older man who just read from the textbook, and the class was held in a tiny little room, but I still liked it anyway. Mommy is going to keep an eye out for a better tutor in the meantime.

I drew an endless amount of drawings and cartoons of people, which I cut out with scissors and left all over the house. A nice way to end a busy and eventful day!

Glasses on / Glasses off

Desert Crouch by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

I was eager to get to school today in order to show off my new glasses. They went over really well... they helped me out in class, but when it came time to wearing them in the playground, I had to put them away. Taking them off and putting them on and taking them off again is going to get a little annoying.

Incidentally, while I was playing with Cheyenne in the playground today, Mommy noticed that I was suddenly much taller than her. Actually, I'm much taller than most of my old friends. It seems as though Claire and I are growing much taller than ANY of the other first graders.

At the end of the day, I watched the end of another Star Wars movie, which I really enjoyed (my parents did not). Mommy and I ordered a pizza because we thought Daddy would be home late - but he wasn't.

I'm dreading tomorrow... I'm supposed to go to the dentist to get that cavity filled. Eek!

Pilgrimage to Lenscrafters

Athabasca Breeze by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

The other day, I told Mommy that I wanted to make some Hallowe'en crafts. Luckily, Mommy had all of the required stuff lying around - we made really awesome jack o' lantern window decorations and stuff. The place is slowly starting to get ready for the holidays!

I spent the better part of the day eager to head back to the mall, where Lenscrafters was waiting for me to come and pick up my brand new pair of glasses. Sure enough, after dinner, Mommy and Daddy and I drove over and got them. I was so happy! I spent the rest of the evening taking them off and putting them on again... checking out the difference between blurry vision and clear vision.

Oh, and, uh... Dennis was a pretty obnoxious dog today. He wouldn't listen to us, wouldn't obey commands, kept knocking into me, kept trying to steal food, and barked at squirrels all night long, waking everyone up.

Missing a Specific Family Member

Ferry Wind 2 by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

This weekend's business paired with a late last night DID lead me to sleep quite well... so Mommy decided to let me sleep in for quite some time this morning, missing the first half of the school day. I didn't mind - it meant that I got to spend more time with Cool Uncle Gareth.

Actually, he and Mommy picked me up from school later on in the afternoon, and I got in some more quality time and stuff. After dinner, we said our good-byes as he headed back to New York. Everyone figured that I'd miss him the most of everyone that came to visit this weekend, but nope... it was my new cousin Josiah that I missed the most. I even told Mommy that if I had a baby one day, I'd name it 'Joe' after him.

G.G.'s Funeral

Grannie's Funeral by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

Today was the big day - we all got ourselves prettied up and headed out for Guelph in order to attend G.G.'s funeral. We stopped for a quick lunch on the way, and arrived at the Church in time to receive several of the guests... a lot of friends and family members that my folks haven't seen in quite some time.

The ceremony was nice - Uncle Armour, Cousin Robin and Daddy all made speeches, cousin Emma played the Viola, and there was singing and prayers and stuff. I'm very happy to report that I was extremely well behaved. Afterward, there were refreshments and a friendly gathering in the common area, where I got to play with my cousins and meet more people.

After a big family portrait (see above), Skye joined us for a long ride home - we got stuck in traffic, but met up with everyone afterwards at our house for dinner. I played video games with Skye and stuff - I got to stay up waaay past my bedtime, which meant that I was pretty exhausted and past my capacity to cope with anything.

We were all so happy to see everyone - G.G. would have been very happy indeed.

Mildred Long Memorial Dinner

Mildred Long Memorial Dinner by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

Mommy and I were up pretty early - I played on the computer while Mommy starting baking apple crisp and other goodies for the big family get-together this evening. Once Daddy was up, he and Uncle Gareth drove Mommy and I into Scarborough, where we did some dress shopping. I picked up something to wear tomorrow at the Gap.

Once we got home, Aunt Diane and Cousins Robin, Brian, Nevi, Skye, and Willow were there, and I played with all of them. Next, I got to meet my cousins Michelle and Josiah, and then I got to meet my Aunt Marty and cousin Michael, and eventually cousins Eric, Elizabeth, Olivia, Lola, Ella, and Matilda arrived, too.

Once Uncle Armour arrived, we all sat down for the massive meal that Robin prepared - all of the best-remembered food that GG used to make for us. We all had a great time, and I think we all really enjoyed it!

By the end of the day, we were pretty exhausted - stayed up a bit and played board games before bed.

Casting Call

Drawing! by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

School was pretty good this morning... nothing too major to report. It did rain a heck of a lot all day, and we all got completely soaked. I got some books from the library and stuff.

Mommy pulled me out of school a little early so that we could take the subway down to Liberty Village to interview with the company that Kristen used to work for - they make some of my favourite shows like "Roll Play" and stuff. They had me try out a bunch of video games on an iPad, I got to meet a cute little dog, and then I got to try some glow-in-the-dark face paint!

Once that was done, Mommy and I took the streetcar to Queen Street, where we caught up with Daddy, and we shopped for funeral clothes. By then I was running out of steam, so we got a lovely sushi dinner downtown before heading home. I was so exhausted... I fell asleep almost instantly.

Not Enough Cool Uncle?

Athabasca Glacier 3 by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 24th]

I woke up this morning, and all I wanted was to play with Cool Uncle Gareth, but he was asleep. So... annoyed, I went to school and had a pretty good day. Mommy came to pick me up at the end of the day, and I was sorry to see that Cool Uncle Gareth wasn't with her. I made a point of later telling Gammy that I miss kindergarten... when I was in kindergarten, Cool Uncle Gareth could pick me up from school.

My parents think he's being extremely generous with his time and appreciate it.

Uh - so, Mommy and I decided to take the bus to the mall so that I could buy a dress to GG's funeral. Unfortunately, there was a horrible accident right in front of the bus, which involved a pedestrian flying through the air. Luckily, neither of us saw it happen... but we took it as an omen that maybe we should just go home. So we did.

Cool Uncle Surprise

Pumpkin Pals by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

School was fine today... not much to report, really. On Wednesdays, I usually stay at school for lunch, which I did again today. I had a better time this time around, and oddly enough I ran into Mommy, who walked through the schoolyard on the way to help Claire's Mommy with their food co-op order.

I got another surprise when Mommy came to pick me up from school - she brought Cool Uncle Gareth with her! I totally forgot that he was coming over for GG's funeral. We had a fun afternoon... I tried to spend as much time with him as I possibly could.

He joined us again for dinner (his second of the night) - we ordered Swiss Chalet, and then we all finally got to play Apples To Apples, which I've been dying to try for several days now.

Cavity Calamity

Beachy Fun by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 22nd]

This morning I was really happy and excited to take a break from school in the morning so that I could make a visit to the dentist's office. I happily sat in the chair, got my teeth cleaned, had a nice exam... and then I overheard the dentist and the hygenist discussing a cavity in the back of my mouth.

I absolutely freaked out - I had a major meltdown, right then and there in the chair. I was so upset and miserable... I brush my teeth so thoroughly and carefully! The fact that I had a cavity was just heartbreaking, and heartbreaking for everyone else listening.

Once I was calmed down, we finished the appointment, and then I went home with Mommy for lunch before returning to school in the afternoon. I wasn't too happy about it, though. Mommy let me watch a cool movie in the afternoon after class... and I just generally took it easy.

Tooth Pillow

Hayseat by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

I finished my 'tooth pillow' today - Mommy and I sat down with the sewing machine and carefully constructed a small little pillow with a pocket on it, where I can place my wobbly teeth when they eventually fall out. Then I can leave the pillow for the tooth fairy. Anyway, I did a number of the stitches myself - my first ever attempt at sewing something. Pretty cool!

The rest of the day was honestly fairly nondescript. I'm kinda excited that all of my extended family will be arriving over the course of the week for GG's funeral... I spent some time hanging out with Gammy and Grandpa, and did a lot of playing outside.

On the way to school, I made a bouquet of rain-soaked leaves, and left it with Mommy for the day... apparently she got funny looks at the coffee shop with her lovely floral arrangement.

Now there's yer problem

Optometry by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 20th]

This morning Mommy and I woke up, took a family poll, and determined what to make for breakfast. We dragged Daddy out of bed and had a pretty massive brunch! Finally, it was off to Tim Horton's for coffee (since we're all out).

Immediately following from there, we drove out to the Bruce Trail - we hit a chunk that we really enjoyed, which involved a lot of climbing, some repelling, and some insanely steep ascensions. Dennis and I handled it quite well, as nervous as we were! It was a seriously awesome hike.

On the way home, the car started making some pretty awful screeching noises. Daddy pulled over to the side of the road in Brampton and investigated. Eventually we called CAA, and the tow truck driver removed the wheel of the car, and revealed that a teeny tiny itsy bitsy pebble got stuck in the break pad, causing the screeching. And that was that!

Glasses

Reflective Beach by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

This morning Mommy and Daddy and I braved the many closed highways and weekend traffic to hit Fairview Mall, where the world's oldest optometrist works. Mommy and Daddy got their eyes tested, and then it was my turn - and it turns out that I actually need glasses! It's mixed emotions for my parents, but I'm pretty excited. We got to go and pick out frames and everything. I should have them in about a week!

Next up, we had the dim sum lunch I was promised last night. Between the three of us, we packed away quite a massive amount of food! Following that, we drove out to Stoufville, where we met up with our friends Lisa, Matt, and Leo, and we all did some apple picking! What a great time... Leo and I had lots of fun. There was a corn maze, a tractor ride, pumpkins, and everything! I really didn't want to leave.

Before bed, Mommy and Daddy and I finally got down to watching Star Wars, starting with Episode I. I tell ya - that Jar-Jar Binks guy is pretty funny!

Mildred Long, 1917-2011

Overgrown Field by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

This morning Mommy informed me that G.G. passed away late last night. My parents and Grandparents were up pretty late, calling family and friends to let them know, and reminiscing and stuff. I'm really glad that I got to visit her a few weeks ago - we had a really lovely visit!

We went to the library today for the first time this school year... I was pretty thrilled about that, and brought home some books and everything! I played Star Wars in the playground with some friends, even though I've never seen it. Coincidentally, Daddy just happen to bring home the whole series of movies on Blu-Ray for us to watch.

I really wanted to go to Starbucks after dinner, but my parents struck a deal with me - we could either do Starbucks or have Dim Sum for lunch tomorrow. I chose Dim Sum.

Published!

Super Dinosaur by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

School was pretty good today - I was happy to have lunch at home, like normal. We had a supply teacher in the morning, which made things different.

When I got home from school, I was happy to discover that Mommy actually made home made doughnuts and cookies for my school's curriculum night. I elected not go attend, however... instead, Daddy and I stayed home, just the two of us. We watched some music videos and played a hilarious game of badminton in the back yard.

Also, I was overjoyed to learn that an illustration and accompanying letter I wrote several months ago was finally published in this month's issue of Image Comics' Super Dinosaur - my favourite comic book! I'm now a published author and illustrator!

Unchallenged

Exploded Stump by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

School was good again today - I've really become pretty close friends with Anton, a second grader who is a big fan of origami. Today, my Mommy got to meet his Mommy, who told her lots of nice things about me.

Anyway, instead of coming home for lunch, I stayed at school and had lunch with the other kids in the gymnasium. I can't say I liked it very much... it was so noisy! In the afternoon, I spent the time wishing I was doing the interesting and difficult second grader work, rather than my boring and simple first grade stuff.

After Daddy came home from work (In Waterloo, today), we all had some dinner and then ran a quick errand to pick up some pumpkin so that Mommy could do some baking.

Scolded

Guestbook by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

School was okay for the first half... we continued to learn how to spell numbers (we're at "five"), and recess was pretty great. Lunch was great - Mommy and I went over to Claire's house with Helena and her Mom, and Claire's mom threw a juice-tasting party! I was proud that my opinion of the best juice differed from that of everyone else.

In the afternoon, I got scolded by my teacher, and again by the phys ed teacher. I wasn't clear on the reasons why (or at least I wasn't when I told Mommy about it), but was really happy to see Mommy when school was over. I played with Claire and some other kid in the playground afterwards - we all ran around in the field and stuff. It was awesome.

After dinner, Daddy took Mommy and I out to buy Dennis some dog food. Daddy and I picked out an awesome dog toy for Dennis, too. Also, I wore the new unicorn t-shirt Daddy bought me today to bed!

Helena's Friend

Skye Ride by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

After a summer of being somewhat at odds, Helena and I finally made friends today - I complimented her dress early in the day, and we were off. We pretty much spent all day joined at the hip - in class, in the playground, and in the future: I took the initiative and invited her to Claire's house for lunch with me tomorrow. You follow that?

After school, Claire and Helena and I played for quite a long time in the playground, where I had some monkeybar success. At the end of the day, I was able to wield a knife and cut up my meat for the first time, and then I went with Mommy and Daddy to the supermarket. Daddy gave me some chewing gum, which I chewed without swallowing for the first time!

Worcestershire, Guelph

Fishing with Papa by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

Mommy and I made a batch of blueberry muffins this morning, and we used them to lure Daddy out of bed. Once we got some coffee into him, we all drove off (including Dennis) to Guelph, so that we could help pack up GG's apartment.

We stopped off at Subway for lunch, which we brought with us to the apartment... and we were a little overwhelmed by the amount of work to do. While Mommy and Daddy packed up linens and pots and pans, I played GG's piano. Daddy emptied out old food from the pantry into the sink, which made the entire place smell like 20-year-old Worcestershire Sauce. The smell kinda drove me nuts, which drove everyone else nuts.

Daddy paid a visit to GG in the hospital while Mommy and I went for a walk. Then it was back home for dinner and a bath!

Weatherproofing Walk

Asulkan Trail 04 by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 12th]

Mommy and Daddy and Dennis and I had a pretty good morning - eventually we all drove over to the butcher, so that Mommy could buy some groceries. She even took me to the bakery, so that I could indulge in a chocolate eclair!

Once we had some lunch, I played outside for a while, and then Daddy enlisted me for a long walk over to Home Depot. We had a great time - we told each other jokes and stuff, and then bought some stuff for weatherproofing the TARDIS. We even got strawberry smoothies from Second Cup on the way home!

I watched Doctor Who with my parents in the afternoon, and then Gammy and Grandpa and Nee Nee came over for a big chicken dinner, after which all of us (save Grandpa) played Ticket to Ride.

Spellign

Desert Stroll by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

At school today, we continued our series of lessons on how to spell the names of the numbers. Today we focused on 'three'. I have to say - while my parents are thrilled with my reading abilities, everyone agrees that my spelling could use some work. I usually just write everything out phonetically.

Carrieann came over after school, which was pretty awesome! The two of us just closed ourself away in my bedroom and quietly kept to ourselves... Mommy couldn't even hear us playing.

Daddy was a little but late coming home from work today again - but he did get home in time to kiss me good night and stuff. I'm pretty excited to watch a new season of Saturday morning cartoons tomorrow morning!

Tetherball

Ocean Run by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 10th]

Third day of grade one today! Once again, it was pretty awesome - although there was some shifting around of the seating arrangement today. My friend Helena moved to another seat, and now I've got a kid named Sam sitting across from me... he's extremely silly. Not as silly as my friend Amarion, but still really silly. In fact at one point today I had to raise my voice and ask him to stop being silly - something my teacher, Mrs. Bradley, definately approved of.

At recess today, Mr. Sheffle taught us all how to play tetherball, which has quite easily become my new favourite game! When I got home from school, I tried explaining the rules of the game to my parents, but I got a little bit confused. It doesn't really matter, though - the bunch of us just kind of make it up as we go anyway.

Carrieann gets the Hug

Peyto Lake by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

Once again, I was up and at 'em pretty early this morning, super excited to be going back to Grade One! So exciting. Once I was there, I was happy to play... and we sort of got around do math. We all counted to one hundred, and we even learned how to spell the names of certain numbers. That's kinda math, right?

After school, I found Mommy waiting for me, and I ran out to her with my arms outstretched to give her a hug... only to see Carrieann off to the side, so I changed course and hugged her instead.

Once I was finished playing with Carrieann, I headed home with Mommy, where for some reason, I decided to paint Christmas ornaments. Hey, why not?

Grade One Day One

Grade One Day One by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 8th]

I was so excited for my very first day of grade school that I was out of bed, cleaned up, dressed, and ready to go before my parents were even awake in the morning! It was pretty adorable. After a nice breakfast, Mommy walked me over to school... and it wasn't what I expected.

I was very happy to meet Mrs. Bradley, my first grade teacher, and I was excited to see all of my friends again - but was shocked to learn that we weren't going to be doing hard core math problems, which is what I expected for some reason. Instead, we did colouring! And I already know how to do that!

After quite a long day (my longest school day ever), I was home and happy. Daddy came home from work early since the radio commercial he was recording finished early, and we had a pretty early dinner. I must've been tired, because I went to sleep with no problems.

Seaton Trail XVIII

Ruckle Point by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

Mommy and I let Daddy sleep in a little bit today, but by the time we realized we were out of coffee, it came time to wake him up so that he could drive us to Tim Horton's. We came home again, and then Daddy and I got stuck watching old Superman movies on television.

Eventually Mommy was able to pull us away from the TV, and we drove back out to our standby hiking trail, the Seaton Trail. We actually managed to get in a pretty good hike, even though Dennis was pulling and tugging and being kinda difficult. At one point I started throwing rocks into the river, and he decided to go for a swim.

We got some Starbucks on the way home, and then had a lovely dinner before Mommy got me rested and relaxed in order to have a good night's sleep. I start grade school tomorrow... I fell asleep really quickly so I don't technically know this, but as I slept, Mommy and Daddy spent the evening stunned that their little roly poly baby is now an incredibly tall and brilliant first grader.

Bike Triumph

Ferry Wait by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 6th]

We all slept in a little bit this morning, which caused us to really hustle when we realized we were gonna be late for our brunch with Kristen downtown. I think we set a land speed record for getting showered and downtown. Anyway, brunch was awesome - it's always awesome to see Kristen... and this time a little bittersweet, because we won't see her again for several months at least.

Once we got home, I went for an incredibly successful bike ride! With Daddy holding my handle bars, I made it all the way around the block without freaking out, getting upset, crying, or stopping! It was amazing! I was so happy... my new mantra was "Stay Positive."

Mommy and Daddy and I also went to Fairview mall to find a new hat for me to wear to my first day of Grade school on Tuesday, but we couldn't find anything. Luckily, once we got home, Mommy made me an awesome beret.

Fun on the QEW

Asulkan Trail 03 by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

As soon as Daddy was back from his early-morning chiropractor's appointment, Mommy and Papa and Daddy and I loaded into the car and headed for Buffalo International Airport along the QEW in order to drop Papa off. Unfortunately, we got totally slowed down by traffic volume, despite the apparently ample time available. Daddy drove faster than he thinks he ever has in his entire life (!) when possible, but we still ended up arriving at the Airport too late.

Luckily for us - Papa's flight was delayed! So everything was fine! We said our goodbyes and sadly saw him off. What a great visit we all had!

Mommy and Daddy and I went to the Galleria mall in Buffalo (where we had lunch) and looked at some stuff, then went over to Target and looked at some stuff, bought some odds and ends, and then headed home... which, once again, took forever due to an endless length of roadside car crashes and accidents.

We had a little bit of dinner when we got home, and then I had a really hard time going to sleep.

Celebrating Birthdays

Wickaninnish Sandpile by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 4th]

Daddy was off to work pretty early - I was the first to wish him a happy birthday, and misinterpreting his new tattoo, shouted "To Infinity And Beyond!" to him as he left for work.

After Mommy made a fancy ginger pumpkin pie for Daddy's birthday and after we had some lunch, Mommy and Papa and I walked over to the toy store, where Papa bought me some new Playmobil stuff for MY birthday. Pretty awesome! I spent the rest of the afternoon playing with my new toys and planning Daddy's birthday dinner.

Once Daddy got home from work, we made reservations at Mikado! Daddy opened some presents, and then we drove over for a lovely Japanese dinner. I made sure to order an extra order of salmon roe! We got home at a good hour, and I ate pumpkin pie before bed.

Phở

Ruckle Park by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy on September 4th]

Mommy and Papa and I had a pretty nice morning, and then we decided to get our act together to visit Daddy at work... right when tremendous thunderclouds began to gather. Eventually we decided to brave the weather and boarded a bus for the subway station.

Eventually we took the subway to a streetcar to where Daddy works... and by then the rain had stopped, so that was good. We walked several blocks with Daddy over to his favourite Vietnamese restaurant, where we all ate a massive amount of Phở! It was delicious!

After we finished and said good-bye to Daddy, we walked all over Chinatown and visited several fish markets. Papa had a great time, and found it all fascinating, but I thought it was incredibly smelly. I spent most of the afternoon with my fingers plugging my nose.

Taking Care of Papa

Desert Shed by Clover_1
[As transcribed by Daddy]

It was a pretty quiet day today. Papa wasn't feeling to well (he usually gets somewhat ill when he travels) so we decided to just stick to the house and take it pretty easy. Mommy was able to head out and run some errands... she went to the garden and stuff with Dennis. I stayed with Papa!

Ursula was over today - the first time in quite a while. She had a pretty cool keychain with her... I liked it so much that she decided to just give it to me! Awesome!

Later in the day, Mommy made Papa and I a batch of pretty delicious home made ice cream. Daddy was late coming home from work - but he got home just in time to show me his new tattoo!

I'm a happy kid living with my parents and our dog in Toronto. I'm goofy, sweet, smart, extremely chatty, and pretty much the cutest kid on the face of the Earth!
